Castropignano, the village nestled in the hills of Molise

Autore: Redazione 29/09/2025 19:22

Castropignano, nestled in the hills of Molise, is a village with a thousand-year history, evident in its monuments and winding streets. Traces of its ancient inhabitants, the Samnites, can be seen in the imposing stone walls dating back to the 4th century BC, which still stand today as witnesses to the past. These ruins offer a glimpse into an era of struggles and conquests. The Roman influence is present through the ruins of two villas found in the surrounding area, confirming the strategic role of the territory. The discovery in 1777 of a 5th-century BC statue of Athena in Roccaspromonte adds further historical depth to the village and its ancient context.

The beauties of the village

Don't miss a visit to Roccaspromonte, a small hamlet characterised by narrow streets and breathtaking views, offering picture-postcard glimpses. Here you will find ancient churches and sanctuaries, such as the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà and the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Peschio, where spirituality blends harmoniously with the surrounding nature.

The historic centre of Castropignano unfolds like a fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets leading to the top of the hill, revealing hidden treasures such as the majestic bell tower, the remains of the clock tower and the baronial palace, witnesses to nobility and power. The churches, authentic architectural gems, include the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, with its neo-Renaissance portal and gilded frescoes, and the Church of San Salvatore Antica, with a Gothic portal and a 17th-century organ.

The Castello d'Evoli, symbol of the village, tells centuries of history, alliances and dominations, until the end of feudalism in the 19th century.

Events in Castropignano

Castropignano offers a rich calendar of traditional and cultural events that enliven the village throughout the year. Among the most eagerly awaited events are religious festivals, such as the celebration of the Madonna del Peschio, which combines devotion and folklore. In summer, festivals and historical re-enactments, such as the Medieval Re-enactment, allow visitors to relive ancient crafts, music and dances. Concerts, theatre performances and craft markets further enrich the cultural offering, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere. These events represent a unique opportunity to discover the tradition, history and identity of Castropignano, making every visit to the village a memorable experience.
