San Salvatore di Sinis – The Rural Village Amid the Sardinian Desert

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:28

In the province of Oristano, on the Sinis Peninsula, lies the village of San Salvatore di Sinis.

Nestled in a desert-like area just minutes from the beaches of Sardinia’s western coast, this village stands out for its low houses, dusty streets, and all-day silence.

In the 1960s and 70s, this charming village became a film set for numerous spaghetti westerns.

What to See in San Salvatore di Sinis

The Church of Cristo Salvatore is the heart of the village, built atop an ancient hypogeum dating back to the Nuragic era.

Surrounding it are the cumbessias, small dwellings used by pilgrims during the novena and the saint’s festival.

Strolling through San Salvatore truly evokes the atmosphere of old Wild West villages, creating a uniquely evocative setting.

Events, Culture, and Traditions

As mentioned earlier, silence reigns throughout the day in this village, which is why there are few recurring events in this beautiful place.

The most important event is the Corsa degli Scalzi (Barefoot Race), held on the first weekend of September. During this religious reenactment, hundreds of barefoot men carry the statue of the saint from Cabras to San Salvatore.

What to See Around San Salvatore di Sinis

Just a few kilometers from the village are spectacular beaches such as Is Arutas—famous for its quartz sand—Maimoni, and Mari Ermi, perfect for those who love unspoiled seas.

Nearby, you’ll also find the archaeological site of Tharros, an ancient Phoenician-Punic city overlooking the sea.

Additionally, the town of Cabras is home to the Giovanni Marongiu Civic Museum, where you can admire the famous Giants of Monte Prama.

San Salvatore di Sinis is a place out of time, where spirituality, culture, mystery, and silence are all contained within just a few meters.
