Montefabbri, listed among the “Most Beautiful Villages of Italy,” owes its origins and its name to Monte Fabrorum, that is, the castle of the Fabbri family.
The first urban layout of the village developed in the 10th century around the ancient parish church of San Gaudenzio.
Although it was evacuated during World War II, the village remained unharmed by bombings and has preserved its 15th-century style intact.
What to see in Montefabbri
Perched on a hill along the ancient road between Pesaro and Urbino, Montefabbri preserves its medieval structure with the evocative castle gate, featuring its original arch and the hinges of the drawbridge. Above the portal stands a 15th-century bas-relief of the Madonna del Latte.
Passing through the gate, visitors enter the village, characterized by picturesque alleys that run along the 12th-century walls, an ancient fortification with caves carved in the Middle Ages. The main street, Via del Baldo, leads to the parish church of San Gaudenzio, dating back to the 9th century, one of the oldest in the diocese of Urbino. Its interiors are enriched with paintings, scagliola furnishings, and a Gothic-style chapel that houses the relics of Saint Marcellina. The 15th-century bell tower, 25 meters high, dominates the landscape. Completing the village is the old public washhouse from the early 20th century, a testimony to everyday life of the past.
Events in the village
In July, Montefabbri hosts three unmissable events: the Fiesta Global Festival of global arts, the religious Feast of Saint Marcellina on the last Sunday of the month, and La Notte dei Castelli (The Night of the Castles), a cultural-tourist initiative that enlivens the town with evening visits and performances.
What to see a few kilometers from the village
Just a few kilometers from Montefabbri, several fascinating places can be visited. Among them stands Urbino, birthplace of Raphael, rich in art and culture with its famous Ducal Palace. Not far away is Pesaro, with its beaches and the Rossini Museum dedicated to the composer. For nature lovers, the Monte San Bartolo Natural Park offers splendid panoramic trails overlooking the Adriatic Sea.
