Visiting Chiusa: what to see in the village of the Isarco Valley

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:29

Nestled between the Isarco Valley and the Dolomites, the village of Chiusa is one of the most charming towns in South Tyrol.

An ancient crossroads along the Brenner route, Chiusa was an important trading center in the Middle Ages and, in the 16th century, a refuge for artists and travelers. Among them was Albrecht Dürer, who immortalized its silhouette in a famous watercolor.

What to see in Chiusa

Among the most fascinating attractions of the village is the Sabiona Monastery, which overlooks Chiusa from its dominant position on the rocky hill.

The monastery is considered one of the oldest places of worship in Tyrol and can be reached on foot along a scenic path through pines and vineyards.

In the heart of the village, you will also find the Civic Museum of Chiusa, housed in the 17th-century Capuchin Convent.

Not to be missed is the Parish Church of St. Andrew, an example of Alpine Gothic with a slender bell tower and a finely carved high altar.

Events, culture, and traditions

In autumn, the town becomes the stage for Törggelen, the ancient rural tradition that celebrates the harvest and the new wine with walks through vineyards, stops at “buschenschank” (rustic taverns), and typical South Tyrolean dishes such as dumplings, speck, chestnuts, and must.

In winter, the village lights up with the Medieval Christmas, an event where the town gives up electric lights and returns to the atmosphere of candles, with choirs, nativity scenes, and costumed Christmas markets.

What to see around Chiusa

Just a few kilometers from Chiusa are the villages of Velturno and Barbiano, with their castles and leaning towers.

Continuing on, you can reach the towns of Bressanone and Vipiteno, as well as the trails of the Puez-Odle Nature Park for those who want to immerse themselves in unspoiled nature.

Chiusa is therefore a perfect destination for hikers, cyclists, and mountain lovers who want to dedicate both mind and body to a stay far from the hectic pace of city life.
