Castell’Arquato, the village among the vineyards of the Val d’Arda

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:34

Castell’Arquato, a village of towers, bell towers, and terracotta roofs, stands out among the vineyards of the Val d’Arda.

Born as a Roman settlement, the village reached its peak during the medieval period, first becoming a free commune, then an episcopal fief, and finally a Visconti stronghold.

Today it is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and is one of the must-see stops on an itinerary through the Piacenza hills.

What to see in Castell’Arquato

The monumental square, one of the most evocative in Italy, is among the village’s unmissable attractions.

Also worth visiting are the Palazzo del Podestà and the Rocca Viscontea.

In addition, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in the 8th century, is an authentic jewel of religious architecture.

Opposite it stands the Palazzo del Podestà, which tells the story of civic life in the Middle Ages.

Just a few steps away rises the Rocca Viscontea: its keep is open to visitors and offers a breathtaking view of the Piacenza hills. Inside, the Museum of Medieval Life presents a journey through armor, everyday objects, and reconstructed settings.

Events, culture and traditions

Among the events that bring the village back to life, the highlight is “Relive the Middle Ages”, a historical reenactment during which ladies, knights, and falconers transform the streets into a fascinating leap into the past.

Cultural events also include festivals dedicated to fantasy cinema: some scenes of the famous film Ladyhawke (1985), starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer, were shot here.

In autumn, the grape harvest and the Wine Fair celebrate Gutturnio DOC, the symbolic wine of the Piacenza hills.

What to see around Castell’Arquato

Near the village are the charming towns of Vigoleno and Gropparello, with its Fairy Tale Park, as well as the Calanchi del Piacenziano, a unique geological reserve in Italy.
