Visiting Carloforte: The “Ligurian” Village in Sardinia

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:33

The village of Carloforte is located on the island of San Pietro, off the southwestern coast of Sardinia, and was founded in the 18th century by Ligurian settlers coming from Tunisia.

This village, listed among the most beautiful in Italy, is strongly influenced by Ligurian culture, which can also be seen in the pastel colors of its houses.

What to See in Carloforte

Due to its strong Ligurian identity, the historic center of Carloforte reflects Ligurian characteristics, with shaded little squares and flowered balconies.

In the evening, visitors gather mainly along the seafront and in Piazza Carlo Emanuele III, where the main attractions are located, such as bars, restaurants, and traditional shops.

Other points of interest include the Civic Museum Casa del Duca, the Church of San Carlo Borromeo, and the Church of the Holy Innocents.

Carloforte is also renowned for its tuna fisheries and for its high-quality bluefin tuna, exported worldwide.

Events, Culture, and Traditions

Among the most important events of the year is Girotonno, an international festival dedicated to tuna culture, featuring tastings and show cooking by chefs from all over the world.

During the summer, the village also hosts open-air concerts, exhibitions, and festivals linked to its seafaring traditions.

What to See Around Carloforte

Since Carloforte is located on the island of San Pietro, it is close to the stunning beaches of the Sardinian coast.

Among the most notable are La Bobba, Cala Fico, and Punta Nera, as well as the evocative Capo Sandalo Lighthouse, the westernmost point of Italy.

Thanks to its location and its blend of Ligurian and Sardinian traditions, the village of Carloforte has achieved such importance that it is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
