Introduction

The Villa of the Papyri, within the archaeological area of Herculaneum, stands among the most important Roman residences excavated to date. Famous for its terraced layout overlooking the Bay of Naples and for the exceptional library discovery, the villa sheds light on elite cultural life in the 1st century BC.

History and discovery

Built in the late Republican period and traditionally connected to aristocratic patrons, the villa was brought to attention during 18th-century excavations. Early work revealed luxury floors, architectural spaces and an impressive assemblage of finds.

The papyrus library

In a room identified as a library archaeologists recovered more than 1,800 papyrus scrolls partially carbonised by the AD 79 eruption of Vesuvius. The texts, mainly in Greek with some Latin, include philosophical writings—notably Epicurean material associated with Filodemo.

Artworks and architecture

The villa is notable for its rich sculptural and decorative programme: bronze and marble statues, polychrome mosaics and painted walls adorned reception areas, peristyles and seaward pavilions. The spatial design reflects both private leisure and public display.

Research, conservation and modern techniques

Conservation and study of the papyri and other finds rely on state-of-the-art methods such as:

  • computed tomography (CT) to inspect internal roll structure;
  • multispectral imaging to enhance faded inks;
  • digital analysis and AI tools for character recognition and text reconstruction.

Ongoing excavations and non-invasive surveys indicate that additional sections of the villa—and possibly more scrolls—may still be buried and available for future study.

Where to see the finds and visitor information

Many objects recovered from the villa are exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and in specialized research facilities. Visitors to the Herculaneum site should check current opening hours and exhibition arrangements, since some items are kept in conservation areas or limited-access displays.

Why visit

  • to learn about elite Roman intellectual life and taste;
  • to see unique finds like the papyrus scrolls and bronze statuary;
  • to observe how contemporary science aids the reading and preservation of ancient materials.

The Villa of the Papyri is essential for anyone interested in archaeological sites, Roman history and the history of the written word.
