SAN CASCIANO DEI BAGNI: permanent Bronze Museum scheduled by the end of 2026

A cultural enhancement project is underway in San Casciano dei Bagni (SI) to establish a permanent museum that will house numerous bronze artifacts and Etruscan-Roman finds recovered in the Bagno Grande area.

The collection and its importance

The core exhibition will feature a collection notable for both quantity and quality, including:

• 24 bronze statues in excellent condition;
• approximately 5,000 coins in gold, silver and bronze;
• more than 300 votive objects and related materials;
• a 90 cm bronze serpent, among the largest found in the region;
• inscriptions in Etruscan and Latin that trace ancient Mediterranean connections.

Planned works and exhibition venue

The operational plan focuses on four main areas:

• continuation of excavations with participation from students and researchers;
• restoration and conservation of finds;
• museum installation at the Palazzo dell'Arcipretura, a 16th-century building in the historic centre;
• creation of an international hub for universities and research centres to study the materials.

The project budget is approximately €4.5 million, covering property acquisition and exhibition fit-out.

Management and local benefits

Management will be entrusted to a participatory Foundation formed by the signatory institutions (Ministry of Culture, Tuscany Region, Municipality and University for Foreigners of Siena) to ensure scientific continuity and long-term planning. Some of the finds have already been shown abroad, helping to raise awareness ahead of the permanent display.
