The Municipality of Varese and the FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) have approved a unified project that paves the way for a permanent installation of Ganzfeld Sight Unseen by American artist James Turrell at Villa Panza.
Originally presented as a site-specific work in the Scuderia Grande during the AISTHESIS exhibition (2013–2014), the installation is an immersive environment of substantial scale (18×8 m, 7 m high) designed to explore the boundaries of human vision through controlled light and color gradients.
To protect the historic park and existing buildings, the plan foresees creating an underground space under part of Villa Panza’s parking area, avoiding new land consumption and visible impacts on the site. The initiative aims to strengthen the local cultural system and position Varese as a reference point for contemporary art.
The partners involved state the project will increase public access to the Villa and Park and enhance Varese’s cultural offer. The FAI will proceed with fundraising efforts to realize the installation in the newly designed space.
