‘Roots Tourism’: pilot projects kick off

On 15 May 2026 an institutional event marked the operational start of the pilot projects under the national Roots Tourism programme, promoted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The event saw the participation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Antonio Tajani, alongside the mayors of Ferentino and Fumone, Piergianni Fiorletta and Matteo Campoli.

The projects aim to strengthen ties between Italian communities abroad and their places of origin, fostering local development through cultural, environmental and infrastructure interventions.

• Revitalisation of historic villages and local identities;
• Promotion of slow mobility and sustainable tourist routes;
• Protection and promotion of environmental heritage, focusing on lakes and natural areas in the district;
• Engagement of local communities and networks of Italians living abroad.

The participating mayors highlighted the project's potential to combine memory, identity and territorial development, thanking institutions and coordinating bodies for their work and for the growth prospects for internal areas.

In the coming months, integrated and sustainable territorial development actions are expected to translate the pilot initiatives into concrete measures for return tourism and cultural promotion of the involved territories.
