Giorgio de Chirico. Return to the Mediterranean in Vieste
From 23 May to 27 September 2026 the Civic Museum of Vieste stages “Giorgio de Chirico. Return to the Mediterranean,” presenting around fifty works — oils, watercolours and drawings — from the collections of the Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico in Rome.
The exhibition, promoted by the Municipality of Vieste in collaboration with the Foundation, is scientifically curated by Lorenzo Canova (University of Molise) with artistic direction by Giuseppe Benvenuto. The project focuses on the artist’s later decades and investigates the relationship between his painting and Mediterranean imagery.
- The sea of painting: works from the 1940s–1960s that engage with European painting traditions.
- The sea of the mind: Neometaphysical works where the Mediterranean becomes a symbolic, dreamlike space.
- The Ascent to Calvary: a section devoted to the artist’s spiritual concerns, with preparatory drawings and documentation.
The exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Jole de Sanna (1947–2004), a Puglia-born art historian who significantly contributed to the study of de Chirico.
