Turi Rapisarda — “Atto dovuto”: photography and social engagement

When: From 15/04/2026 to 20/05/2026

Where: Ottofinestre, Via Saluzzo 88/F, Turin

Ottofinestre presents “Turi Rapisarda. Atto dovuto”, curated by Carola Allemandi. Included in the off program of the Turin Photo Festival, the exhibition pairs recent works with lesser-known projects to highlight the social and experimental dimensions of Rapisarda’s photography.

What to see

The show is structured around three series that trace different phases and approaches in the artist’s practice:

  • Sei dei Mille (1992): six large-format portraits of migrant workers from Southern Italy. Darkroom prints by the artist that recall the iconography of Garibaldian portraits and turn the gallery’s windows into a symbolic display.
  • Mutoid (1994–1995): a documentary body of work on the Mutoid Waste Company, a community based in Santarcangelo di Romagna. The images reconstruct a way of life centered on recycling and anti-capitalist practices, offering social and cultural context.
  • Pixel on Silverprint (2021): developed with Edoardo Salviato, this project examines the relationship between body and technology through performative methods and the smartphone as a light source, continuing 20th-century analog experimentation.

Meaning of “Atto dovuto”

While the title borrows a judicial term, the exhibition frames photography primarily as a necessary act: a means to expose social realities and to assume an ethical as well as an artistic role.

About the artist

Born in Catania and based in Turin, Turi Rapisarda has developed an independent and consistent photographic practice. He graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Torino in 1982 and founded the Associazione Culturale VSV in 1983. Alongside his artistic output, he has been involved in art therapy and education, and since 1996 he runs a private studio where he teaches fine art photography.
