Corciano awarded the title of "City"

The President of the Republic has signed the decree granting Corciano the official status of City, a formal recognition under Article 18 of the Unified Text of Local Authorities. The honour is given to municipalities notable for historical, artistic, cultural and economic relevance.

Why Corciano was recognised

The decree highlights Corciano's medieval historic centre—listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy—and the town's broader identity, from notable artworks to archaeological traces spanning Etruscan-Roman and Renaissance periods.

  • Art and heritage: significant works and historical evidence within the village;
  • Cultural life: events like the Corciano Festival and an active museum network;
  • Nature and trails: scenic routes connected to Monte Malbe, a site of European community interest;
  • Economic fabric: about 1,800 businesses across commerce, crafts and industry.

Statements and commitments

The mayor described the moment as both moving and institutionally significant, stressing that the title should be seen as a responsibility that calls for continued, serious work by local authorities and citizens to promote and protect the territory.

Facts and additional honours

  • Population: roughly 21,800 inhabitants;
  • Average age: 43.6 years, among the youngest in the Umbria region;
  • Other recognitions: Council of Europe’s Prix de l'Europe, European Community of Sport 2026 title and Plastic Free Municipality status for 2024–2026.

The municipal administration thanked the cultural office, council members and other authorities who supported the application. For residents and visitors alike, the new title is an incentive to further safeguard, promote and enjoy Corciano’s historical and cultural assets.
