The territory and the history of the village
Located in a wide area of the Alto Garda Bresciano Regional Park and characterized by numerous valleys, including that of San Michele, Tremosine—whose name some believe derives from the Etruscan language—was inhabited as early as the Neolithic, as evidenced by the findings of Arturo Cozzaglio. It later came under Etruscan and then Roman rule. Recognized as a municipality in 1268, during the struggles between the Visconti and the Della Scala for control of the territory, it was subjected to the Bishop of Trento, then became a fief under Federico Castelbarco, and finally passed to the Republic of Venice in 1426. It was divided into four districts, each organized into vicinie governed by a podestà.

After the plague of 1630 and the raids during the War of the Spanish Succession, Tremosine was assigned to the province of Brescia. During this period, it witnessed the passage of Carlo Pisacane before coming under the control of the Kingdom of Sardinia. With the outbreak of World War I, it became a fortified territory of particular importance after the Battle of Caporetto, and in 1962 it unfortunately became known for a tragic crime case.
Monuments and places of interest
Throughout its territory, Tremosine stands out as one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy, thanks to its many religious and military monuments, as well as its breathtaking views and proximity to one of the most beloved lakes. Among the most notable buildings are the Church of San Giovanni Battista, a Gothic-style structure built in the 12th century; the Church of San Lorenzo Martire, dating from the same period; the Hermitage of San Michele in the San Michele Valley; and the Church of Sant’Ercolano, built in 1185.

From a military perspective, numerous trenches from World War I can still be visited. They begin in the village of Pieve and continue uninterrupted to Polzone, located in various hamlets of the municipality, often in dramatic positions overlooking Lake Garda.
Curiosities about the village of Tremosine
In addition to its strong ties with history and nature, Tremosine—whose motto, taken from a Roman funerary inscription, is “Good fortune to you, traveler”—is also known for hosting the Festival of Ancient Music, the traditional game of sciapi (a playful battle with eggs), and the autumn food and wine festival featuring typical dishes such as spit-roasted meat with polenta and red wine, tortelli alla polenta cùsa, and spongadì.
