Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:20

Nestled among the rolling hills of Oltrepò Pavese, lies the village of Varzi, one of the most fascinating in Lombardy and among the most beautiful in Italy.

Located along the ancient Salt Road, this village reached its peak during the medieval period, when it became a strategic point for merchants and pilgrims traveling between the Po Valley and the Ligurian Sea.

What to see in Varzi

Among the characteristic features of Varzi’s historic center are its stone houses, medieval towers, and ancient workshops, reflecting the historical identity of its inhabitants.

Among the most important attractions of the village are:

  • The Witches’ Tower, linked to the legend of the Inquisition
  • The Malaspina Tower, once part of the defensive walls of the village

Also noteworthy are the Capuchin Church and the Church of the Rossi, with its fascinating Baroque façade.

Events, culture, and traditions

A typical product of Varzi is its PDO salami, celebrated every summer with the Varzi Salami Fair.

In autumn, the village celebrates the grape harvest and the collection of black truffles with numerous events, while during the Christmas season it comes alive with medieval Christmas markets.

What to see around Varzi

Varzi enjoys a strategic position for exploring the Oltrepò Pavese.

Just a few kilometers away are the villages of Fortunago and Zavattarello, both included among the “Most Beautiful Villages of Italy,” as well as the majestic Dal Verme Castle.

For trekking enthusiasts, the trails of the Capanne di Marcarolo Park and the panoramic routes of Monte Penice are within easy reach.

Varzi is a perfect stop for those who want to enjoy a few days of rest away from the frenetic pace of the city, rediscovering the art and culture of Oltrepò Pavese.
