The archaeological complex of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme was opened for a reserved tour that allowed participants to explore areas normally closed to the public due to PNRR-funded restoration works. The approximately one-hour walk was led by the site's archaeologist, Simona Morretta, and organized in collaboration with the Special Superintendent for Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Rome.
The route highlights the transition from imperial Rome to the Christian era: among the remains is the area associated with the imperial residence traditionally linked to Empress Helena. The event involved a limited number of participants (21) and is part of a broader media initiative focusing on lesser-known sites in the capital.
This temporary opening was organized to promote special programming dedicated to Rome: the documentary series aims to tell the story of everyday spaces and lesser-visited archaeological areas, offering insights into recent excavations and finds.
Practical information: the visit took place on April 18, 2026. The complex remains subject to restoration works and will gradually reopen to the public once interventions are complete. For updates on openings and guided visits, check official channels of the Superintendent and the organizing partners.
