The community of Sutera has initiated a candidacy for its living nativity to be inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list, aiming for recognition by 2027. The proposal was filed by the association "L'Italia nel cuore – Progetto Futuro" and forwarded through the appropriate national channels.
Local and national representatives coordinated the effort, gathering documentation and mobilizing community participation to support the dossier submitted to the relevant authorities.
The Sutera living nativity belongs to a broader tradition of Nativity representations inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. Its staging involves a wide range of skills: domestic practices, artisanal production, costume making and performative elements preserved across generations.
The nomination has been sent to national authorities and onwards to UNESCO in Paris for evaluation. The process typically includes requests for additional documentation, possible technical visits and a final decision by the UNESCO committee.
The outcome will also depend on active local involvement: maintaining traditional practices, documenting their social meaning and demonstrating community ownership are essential for a successful nomination.
Visitors interested in experiencing the tradition firsthand are encouraged to attend the Sutera performances, which offer a direct insight into the village's living heritage, crafts and communal life.
