Subiaco: Monastery of Santa Scolastica opens the chapel of the Madonna and Saint Chelidonia

Within the Days for the enhancement of ecclesiastical cultural heritage, the Territorial Abbey of Subiaco offers guided visits to the chapel of the Madonna and Saint Chelidonia, a space previously closed to the public. The initiative is part of a national programme to promote the Church's cultural assets, showcasing works, relics and devotional history preserved in religious sites.

The chapel is of notable artistic and historical interest: its decoration and building history are connected to the translation of Saint Chelidonia's relics in July 1578. Key figures in the site’s story include the Subiaco monk Guglielmo Capisacchi from Narni, the noblewoman Paola Pusterla, and the painter Marcello Venusti, who worked from designs associated with Michelangelo.

Visits are organised in cooperation with volunteers from the "Ora et Labora" Association. Practical details for visitors:

  • Period: Saturdays and Sundays 16-17, 23-24, 30-31 May and 1-2, 6-7 June 2026
