Strassoldo, a hamlet of Cervignano del Friuli, is a rare example of a well‑preserved medieval settlement in the Friulian plain, surrounded by spring waters (risorgive) and crossed by the Taglio River. Its two main manors, the Castello di Sotto and the Castello di Sopra, were built by the Counts Strassoldo–Graffemberg around the original towers of the “castle of the two towers,” already mentioned as early as 530. Cobbled streets, crenellated walls, and 18th‑century parks narrate centuries of noble history, restoration, and rural life. Over time, the village hosted illustrious figures such as Field Marshal Radetzky and even inspired Gabriele d’Annunzio. Among elegant villas, family chapels, and panoramic views, Strassoldo preserves a unique charm where history, architecture, and nature intertwine.
What to see in the village
The two castles of Strassoldo, set on islands surrounded by the Taglio River and its branches, preserve antique furniture, paintings, and family relics, while their spring‑fed parks are among the most enchanting in Friuli. The Castello di Sopra features Chinese and English roses, rare plants, palm gazebos, an orangery, wells, and centuries‑old trees, with weeping willows reminiscent of d’Annunzio and aquatic fauna such as swans and mallards. The Castello di Sotto blends harmoniously with fields and woods, enriched by ponds, fountains, statues, and rare species. Also worth visiting are Villa Vitas, which offers wine tastings, the small church of Santa Maria in Vineis, and the Mulino del Bosco, which preserves 14th‑century frescoes and ancient rural equipment.
Exploring the surroundings
The area around Strassoldo offers a wealth of cultural and natural attractions. Just a few kilometers away lies Cervignano del Friuli, with its historic churches, characteristic squares, and small local museums. A little further, Aquileia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, amazes with its Patriarchal Basilica, Roman mosaics, and archaeological area, bearing witness to the grandeur of the ancient Roman city. Nature lovers can explore the Valle Canal Novo Nature Reserve and the springs of the Tagliamento, ideal for walks among woods, canals, and local fauna. The surrounding countryside is dotted with historic villas and wineries, where visitors can taste traditional Friulian wines while immersing themselves in the region’s history, landscapes, and flavors.
