Stilo: the village of the Sun

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 18:16

Developed along the slopes of Mount Consolino, in the heart of the Locride area, Stilo presents itself as the Village of the Sun, carved into the rock. Its unmistakably medieval style blends with Calabria’s wild nature, where the gaze is lost among rooftops and emerald-green landscapes.

Stilo is the religion of light: a soft light that penetrates its Byzantine churches, the southern light that illuminates houses and streets, a gentle glow that envelops the village and permeates the very essence of Stilo.

Like a column, old Stilo stands tall before the sun, overlooking the silvery riverbed, with its houses built on tuff stone, its wrinkles, and its generous pride.

Things to See in Stilo

Stilo has a long and mysterious history, beginning with the Greek colonies in southern Italy and becoming even more fascinating over time. Its spiritual heart is undoubtedly the Cattolica, a small Byzantine church from the 10th century, characterized by five brick domes and an interior rich in frescoes and symbols. A place that enchants with its harmonious and stabilizing simplicity.

Next to the Cattolica, the Stilo Cathedral is certainly worth a visit. Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, it rises with its ornate Gothic-style portal, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere that permeates the village.

Not to be missed are the remains of the Norman Castle, offering a privileged view over the village and the entire Ionian coast. Also noteworthy is the Abbey of San Giovanni Therestis, an example of Baroque architecture with Byzantine origins, preserving stories from another time.

To complete the journey, the small local museums deserve mention, such as the Tommaso Campanella Museum, which celebrates and recounts the story of the famous philosopher born in Stilo.

Traditions and Events

Stilo is a lively and dynamic village, rich in events organized throughout the year, such as the Epiphany Fair on January 6th, when the town fills with life and markets. Also unmissable is the Feast of Saint George, celebrated on April 23rd.

The main event that warms the hearts of Stilo’s inhabitants is the Palio di Ribusa, a medieval festival held during the first week of August. It is one of Calabria’s most popular summer events: a grand historical reenactment with music, performances, and food throughout the streets of the village. On the final day, the Giostra dell’Anello (Joust of the Ring) takes place, awarding the winner with the Pallium, an artistically crafted drape.

Around the Village of Stilo

Visiting Stilo allows you to explore a varied territory with breathtaking views. From the village, several trails climb Mount Consolino, leading to the discovery of the Cave of Sant’Angelo, an ancient Byzantine hermitage.

Not far away lies the Stilaro Valley, rich in natural beauty, with clear streams surrounded by historic mills and scattered traces of archaeological excavations.

Visiting Stilo is a 360-degree experience—just pack your bags and live it all.
