On April 15, 2026, 46 archaeological items recovered during investigations conducted in Italy and France were officially returned to the National Archaeological Museum of Sibari. The handover took place in the Sala Leone at Palazzo Arnone, attended by local civil and judicial authorities.
The operations were led by the Carabinieri's Cultural Heritage Protection Unit (Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale) under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Crotone. The probe, initiated between 2017 and 2018, dismantled an organized network of illicit excavations and trafficking across several European countries.
Recovered items include ceramics and metal objects of Etruscan, Magna Graecia and Roman origin. Notable pieces include ritual vessels and a deer-head rhyton, previously displayed at an international exhibition in 2022, underscoring both the artistic value and the international scope of the investigation.
The inquiry resulted in precautionary measures against 23 individuals and numerous searches. Charges involve criminal association, damage to archaeological heritage, illicit appropriation, handling of stolen goods and illegal export of cultural property.
The repatriation is an important victory for cultural heritage protection: the artifacts are now available for public viewing and scholarly research, helping to reconstruct the ancient history of the area.
