Seborga: the “principality” village between history, mystery and Ligurian charm

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:21

Located on the hills of the far western Ligurian Riviera, Seborga is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, and it is famous for having proclaimed itself an independent principality, complete with a prince, its own currency, and personalized license plates.

This choice has greatly intrigued tourists and international media, allowing for a true renaissance also from a tourism perspective.

What to see in Seborga

The heart of the village is Piazza San Martino, which hosts the Parish Church of San Martino, built in the 17th century in Baroque style, and flanked by the Palazzo dei Monaci.

Not far away is the Palazzo del Governo, seat of the principality, where visitors can admire the flags, stamps, and the local currency, the Luigino.

Events, culture and traditions

The most popular event, which revives the culture and religious traditions of the village, is the Feast of San Bernardo, the patron saint, during which processions, performances, and tastings of typical local products take place.

From the sacred to the profane, another unique and characteristic event is the election of the prince, during which the village hosts costumed ceremonies and lively celebrations in the square.

What to see around Seborga

Just a few kilometers from Seborga, you can reach the coastal towns of Bordighera and Ospedaletti.

A little further away lies Sanremo, which with its famous Ariston Theatre renews every year the appointment with Italy’s most beloved festival, the Festival of Italian Song.

For nature and trekking enthusiasts, the trails of the Val Nervia offer walks among hills and olive groves, while further inland you can find the picturesque villages of Apricale and Dolceacqua.
