Scilla and Chianalea: Calabria’s little 'Venice' by the Strait

Autore: Redazione 27/04/2026 15:35

Scilla and Chianalea: a coastal historic village

Descending toward the sea in Scilla, the air fills with salt and the sight of houses perched above the water. Chianalea is the ancient fishing quarter where narrow alleys and steps create scenes that recall a southern Venice, with boats resting where cars would normally park.

How to get there

By car: take the A2 (Autostrada del Mediterraneo) and follow signs to Scilla; the exit brings you close to the promontory.

By train: regional trains on the coastal line stop at Scilla station, within walking distance of Marina Grande.

From Sicily: cross from Messina to Villa San Giovanni and continue a short distance along the coast by car or train.

Main attractions

  • Ruffo Castle: the fortress offers terraces with sweeping views over the Strait and the town below.
  • Piazza San Rocco: primary viewpoint overlooking the sea and Chianalea's rooftops.
  • Marina Grande: beach area with pebbles, equipped lidos and seaside restaurants.
  • Scaro Alaggio and Via Annunziata: historic spots where fishing life and boat maintenance are visible up close.

Why visit Chianalea

Chianalea provides an authentic seaside village experience: houses built on the rocks, walking-only alleys, and an intimate link with traditional fishing. It is perfect for photographers and travelers seeking quiet, evocative places.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable footwear: many paths are uneven and there are steep steps.
  • The historic district is mostly pedestrian: park outside the harbor and explore on foot.
  • Visit the castle during cooler hours for the best light and views.
  • Combine a coastal stay with a short trip inland to Aspromonte National Park for mountain walks.

Summary: Scilla and Chianalea are essential stops for those discovering Calabria’s coastal villages: a mix of history, mythology, maritime traditions and unique sea views over the Strait of Messina.
