Paglicci Cave: conference to relaunch site and support UNESCO nomination

Date: 23 May 2026
Venue: Auditorium Ex-Palestra Comunale, Via Genova, Rignano Garganico (FG), Italy

Why attend

Grotta Paglicci is a unique Paleolithic archive: excavations have produced over 45,000 finds spanning roughly 500,000 to 11,000 years ago, including rock paintings, engravings, human remains (notably the "Woman of Paglicci") and numerous stone and bone tools. The public conference aims to support the site's nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage property and to start a renewed phase of site enhancement.

Event goals

  • Promote Grotta Paglicci's UNESCO World Heritage nomination.
  • Secure the site and restart scientific excavations.
  • Complete expansion works and define management of the Paleolithic Museum of the Gargano.
  • Restart guided tours and cultural activities for both the public and researchers.

Program highlights (23 May 2026)

  • 09:00 – 13:00: guided excursion through the Gargano landscape to contextualize the site.
  • 17:00 – 20:00: conference and cultural event at the Auditorium Ex-Palestra Comunale with local officials, archaeologists, cavers and associations; closing musical performance.
