Scala: the oldest village on the Amalfi Coast

Scala stands about 450 metres above sea level in the Monti Lattari and is one of the oldest settlements on the Amalfi Coast. Quieter than the coastal towns, it offers tranquillity, sweeping views and a strong sense of local tradition.

What to see in Scala

The village is divided into several hamlets—Pontone, Minuta, Scala Centro, Campidoglio, San Pietro and Santa Caterina—each with notable sites:

  • Duomo of San Lorenzo: a mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Rococo elements, this medieval church stands out for its size and historical value.
  • Arab baths in Pontone and Santa Caterina: remains that highlight Scala's past importance; the Santa Caterina site is the best preserved.
  • Basilica of Sant'Eustachio: dating to the 13th century, it dominates Pontone and is among the most striking buildings in southern Italy.
  • Torre San Felice: the cylindrical tower that survives from the medieval castle, once part of local defensive strategies.

Why visit in spring

Spring is the perfect season to explore Scala: mild temperatures, clear views over the coast and quieter trails through olive groves and vineyards. The village encourages a slow pace—walking, tasting local food and discovering history.

Practical tips

  • Getting there: reachable by car or local connections from Amalfi and Ravello; mountain roads require careful driving.
  • Packing: comfortable shoes for streets and trails, a light jacket for evenings, and a camera for panoramic shots.
  • Recommended stay: a weekend allows time for main sights and nearby walks.

Suggested weekend itinerary

  • Day 1: explore the historic centre, visit the Duomo of San Lorenzo and Torre San Felice; dinner at a local eatery.
  • Day 2: head to Pontone to see the Arab baths and the Basilica of Sant'Eustachio; enjoy a walk among olive terraces and viewpoints.

Scala combines heritage, landscape and authenticity—an excellent choice for a peaceful spring escape away from the busier routes of the Amalfi Coast.
