Antico Presente: a bridge between past and present

Artist Giorgio Tentolini debuts Antico Presente, an installation that juxtaposes classical sculptural canons with contemporary materials and techniques. The work centers on a reinterpretation of Antonio Canova’s Venus Italica, constructed from multiple layers of metal mesh that are cut and hand-stitched.

The series consists of two-dimensional panels arranged in a circular formation, evoking the academic studio where students once gathered around a model. Visitors are encouraged to consider not only form but also the deeper meanings the figure assumes within today’s interconnected society.

  • Opening: Thursday, May 21 at 18:00.
  • Exhibition period: May 22 to May 31.
  • Venue: Archaeological Museum San Lorenzo, Cremona.
  • Context: preview of the exhibition Paradisi artificiali and part of the Cremona Contemporanea off program.

The use of metal mesh is intentionally symbolic: its knots and connections speak to the social and cultural networks that define contemporary life. The multiple perspectives on the Venus mirror the fragmented identities that emerge in an age of constant connectivity.

Note: on Saturday, May 23, Cremona will celebrate the European Night of Museums, featuring free admissions and special activities across the city’s cultural venues.

Visitors should plan their trip within the stated dates and check the museum's opening hours and visitor information before attending.
