Giacomo Balla at MART: the Biagiotti Cigna Collection
Period: 16 May - 18 October 2026
Venue: MART - Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rovereto (TN), Italy
The MART presents, for the first time in Italy, the full collection acquired by Laura Biagiotti: roughly 240 works that trace Giacomo Balla’s creative development. The exhibition provides a cohesive view of his trajectory, from divisionist beginnings through futurist experimentation to garments and objects that highlight the link between painting, fashion and applied arts.
- Early section: divisionist works documenting Balla’s early focus on light and color.
- Futurist section: pieces from his most experimental period, including rare “Iridescent Compenetrations” and early traces of abstraction in Europe.
- Fashion and applied arts: garments, embroidered vests, ties, patterns and the 1930 dress made for his daughter Luce, showing Balla’s interest in Gesamtkunstwerk (total art).
- Monumental works and late portraits: emblematic items such as the studio door and late works that conclude the artistic journey.
- Archival materials and unconventional supports: preparatory studies and objects that reveal the artist’s creative process.
The layout also establishes a dialogue with works by Fortunato Depero, highlighting exchanges among the leading figures of Italian avant-garde movements.
