The village of Sarnano is set in a very evocative landscape, with the Sibillini Mountains as its backdrop.
Its name has uncertain origins: it may derive from the name of the landowner during the Roman Empire.
This medieval village, built entirely of brick, boasts a historic center that is essentially an open-air museum, telling the story of the town’s evolution.
What to see in the village of Sarnano
The Hermitage of Soffiano, known since 1101, is a place of meditation and prayer nestled in the woods near Sarnano. Founded by the sons of Count Ismidione and later inhabited by the Franciscans, it is believed that St. Francis himself stayed here. It can be reached by an easy walk accessible all year round; the traditional Christmas Eve Mass is still celebrated here.
Another natural treasure is the Via delle Cascate Perdute (Path of the Lost Waterfalls), near the historic center of Sarnano. About 6 km long with minimal elevation gain, it connects three waterfalls of the Tennacola stream, two of which were rediscovered only in 2020. The route allows visitors to admire enchanting waterfalls, swim, and continue on to the Pozze dell’Acquasanta and the Cascata del Pellegrino.
Finally, the plateau of the Piani di Ragnolo offers a spectacle of wild blooms from late May to mid-June, with 51 species of wild orchids, as well as gentians, poppies, buttercups, violets, daffodils, and asphodels. A natural wonder to contemplate and photograph.
Events in the village
Sarnano hosts numerous historical, cultural, and gastronomic events throughout the year.
Among the most important is the Palio del Serafino, held on the second Sunday of August and considered one of the most significant historical reenactments in Italy.
Every year, the road connecting Sarnano to Sassotetto becomes the stage for the prestigious Trofeo Scarfiotti, an international uphill car race featuring historic cars and racing prototypes.
On August 15, the feast of the patron saint, Santa Maria Assunta, is celebrated with a major event in the world of entertainment.
