Santa Severina: a stone fortress suspended between sky and history

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 18:15

Santa Severina rises above the Neto Valley, perched on a large rocky spur dominating the landscape. From afar, it almost looks like a castle suspended in the sky, making the view of the village truly unforgettable.

Thanks to its position and the fortifications that protect it, Santa Severina has always been an impregnable place. Its Norman Castle is a splendid example of military engineering: complex and still perfectly preserved today, it consists of a square keep and four cylindrical corner towers guarding the territory. Inside, you can still find mysterious underground labyrinths, stables, grand halls, beautiful frescoes, and Baroque paintings by Francesco Giordano.

Walking through the village means exploring thousands of years of history with every step, losing yourself in breathtaking views over the valley, historic glimpses among the narrow alleys, and the pure air and silence that permeate the mind.

What to see in Santa Severina

The undisputed protagonist of the village is the Norman Castle, one of the best-preserved fortifications in all of southern Italy. Imposing yet harmonious, it embodies centuries of history and tradition, telling the deep roots of the village and preserving testimonies curated in every detail. The castle also houses precious artifacts and historical works, as it is home to the great Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.

Next to the castle stands the Cathedral of Santa Anastasia, among the oldest in Italy. Circular in layout and immersed in silence, it represents the perfect example of Paleochristian art and is a place of great spirituality.

Not to be missed is the historic center: compact and harmonious, it is easy to explore and offers memorable views in every ancient alley. Here you can also visit the Museum of Rural Civilization, which recounts daily life in past centuries through a wide variety of testimonies.

Traditions and events

Santa Severina is a lively, dynamic, and vibrant village, where traditions are an integral part of the social fabric. The Patronal Feast of Saint Anastasia, celebrated in August, is the highlight of the year, with solemn and spiritually authentic processions, numerous marching bands, evening performances with international artists, and the unmissable food and wine tastings.

During the summer, the village also hosts numerous musical events, cultural performances, and even sports competitions held in Piazza Campo or inside the castle.

Exploring the surroundings of Santa Severina

The village enjoys a privileged position for exploring the Sila Greca and the Ionian side of Calabria. Just a few kilometers away, you can reach Caccuri and San Giovanni in Fiore, villages rich in history and charm.

Also easily accessible are the trails through the Sila forests, offering unforgettable and exciting walks, picnic areas, and timeless panoramas that leave a lasting impression on every visitor.

Santa Severina is not a village you simply see — here you are absorbed into the historical fabric intertwined with the beauty of every view and panorama, a must-visit for those seeking unique and indelible emotions.
