San Casciano dei Bagni: new agreement approved for the Bagno Grande archaeological heritage

The Tuscany Region has approved a new framework agreement for the Bagno Grande archaeological site in San Casciano dei Bagni. The pact, signed by the Ministry of Culture, the Region, the Municipality and the University for Foreigners of Siena, renews the 2022 arrangement and strengthens the project's managerial and organisational structure.

Confirmed strategic goals include protection, research, promotion and public access to the finds from the Etruscan-Roman sanctuary that made the site internationally significant.

Main measures included in the agreement:

• creation of a participation foundation (Fondazione di partecipazione) to ensure integrated and stable management;
• continuation of archaeological campaigns and excavations;
• establishment and management of the archaeological area and a museum for the finds;
• creation of an international research hub dedicated to study and promotion of the local cultural heritage.

Eugenio Giani (President of the Region) highlighted the historical and identity value of the finds and the need for a project that supports culture, research and quality tourism as drivers for local development. Cristina Manetti (Councillor for Culture) stressed that the agreement consolidates collaboration among institutions, research and the local community, and that the Foundation model ensures long-term continuity.

The council's approval currently does not imply direct charges to the regional budget. Possible economic participation in the future Foundation will be determined by subsequent programming acts and subject to sustainability checks required by regional regulations.

For visitors and tourism operators: the agreement foresees progressive enhancement of the site and the creation of exhibition and scientific services. Information on openings, guided visits and initiatives will be released by the institutions involved once operational plans are finalised.
