Rotondella: “the balcony of the Ionian Sea”

Autore: Redazione 02/08/2025 19:20

Known as “the balcony of the Ionian Sea,” the village of Rotondella is one of the most fascinating in the province of Matera, offering a panoramic view of the sea and the valley of the Sinni River.

This village preserves a strong historical identity, which over the years has contributed to its rediscovery from both a tourist and media perspective.

What to see in Rotondella

The urban layout, of medieval origin, develops in a spiral along the hill on which the village stands. For this reason, the historic center of Rotondella is a true labyrinth of narrow alleys.

Among the most interesting places are the Mother Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Baroque style, and the Church of the Rosary, with its sober and elegant decorations.

Strolling through the streets, one eventually reaches the belvedere, from which it is possible to admire the entire stretch of the Ionian coastline.

Events, culture and traditions

As mentioned earlier, Rotondella is deeply tied to its cultural and religious roots.

Among the most popular events is the patronal feast of San Rocco, held in August with processions, folk music, and fireworks.

During the summer, food festivals and gastronomic events also take place, where visitors can taste typical products such as “U’ Pastizz”, a traditional rustic pastry from Rotondella, and chocolate-covered dried figs, a local delicacy.

What to see around Rotondella

From Rotondella, it is possible to reach in just a few kilometers the beaches of Policoro and Nova Siri, making it an ideal destination for families looking for the sea close at hand.

Heading inland, one can visit the Pollino National Park, perfect for trekking and nature walks.

Also fascinating is the archaeological site of Siritide, an ancient colony of Magna Graecia near Policoro.

Rotondella thus manages to combine a spectacular panorama, typical Lucanian products, and cultural traditions such as the ancient feast of San Rocco.
