History and description
Built toward the end of the 15th century by order of Costanzo Sforza, with the aim of completing the previous series of fortifications, the fortress—featuring a quadrilateral plan, four towers, a drawbridge, a central keep, as well as numerous hidden frescoes and Masonic symbols—was only completed in 1503, after the Sforza regained power following Cesare Borgia’s occupation. Later placed under the dominion of the Papal State, in 1864 it was transformed into a prison and subsequently abandoned, until the recent restoration phase that will make it, in addition to housing the State Archives, also the Museum of the Dario Fo and Franca Rame Foundation.
Curiosities
During its time as a prison, it hosted numerous anarchists and intellectuals, including Giovanni Pascoli who, accused of subversive activity, is said to have turned his cell into a true reading and study room.
Access
Accessible only through guided tours, the fortress can be visited at the cost of €15, with free entry and specific reductions available, as well as free access during the so-called “Weekend della Rocca.”
How to reach it
Located just a few minutes’ walk from the historic center, Rocca Costanza can be reached via pedestrian or cycling paths after parking in the surrounding areas.
As one of the last intact Renaissance fortresses in the Marche region, a visit to Rocca Costanza is a true journey into the history and culture of the city.
