46 Etruscan, Magna‑Greek and Roman Artifacts Returned to the Archaeological Parks of Crotone and Sibari

The Carabinieri unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) has handed over 46 artifacts of Etruscan, Magna‑Greek and Roman origin to the Archaeological Parks of Crotone and Sibari. The items were recovered as part of the investigation called "Achei" and were linked to an international illicit trafficking network.

  • Investigation: inquiries conducted between 2017 and 2018 under the coordination of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Crotone.
  • Recoveries: artifacts located in Italy and France, with connections to the UK, Germany and Serbia.
  • Legal measures: precautionary measures issued against 23 individuals and 80 search warrants executed.
  • Cultural significance: the recovered objects will join the parks' "Saved Archaeology" sections and will be displayed on rotation to support public access and conservation.

Investigations reconstructed organised looting operations by groups of tombaroli and complex reception channels that fed the clandestine market of antiquities—an activity that causes significant cultural and economic damage. The restitution highlights the role of law enforcement and cultural institutions in safeguarding and returning archaeological evidence to the community.

Practical note: no exact exhibition dates have been announced yet. The Archaeological Parks plan to include the artifacts in rotating displays and museum storage, enabling future public viewing and educational use.
