On March 12, 2026 the Masters of Traditional Italian Artisanal Gelato submitted a candidacy seeking formal recognition of gelato as an element of Italy's intangible cultural heritage.
The initiative follows the recent inclusion of Italian cuisine — which also covers gelato — on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and aims to protect a symbol of Made in Italy from increasing industrial standardization.
Industry experts stress that protecting artisanal gelato also depends on consumer awareness: purchasing choices shape market standards and reward producers who maintain high quality. Distinguishing genuine artisanal products from standardized ones requires attention to ingredients, technique and seasonality.
Among the organizations involved is Artigeniale, a company focused on training and consulting for gelato makers. Founded in 1998, it supports product development, marketing and business management, helping many artisanal shops remain active and competitive.
The candidacy underscores the ongoing effort to recognize culinary practices as expressions of cultural identity, strengthening the ties between tangible heritage, cultural landscapes and traditional skills.
