Book presentation: "Monetary Finds in Milan"

On Wednesday, 27 May 2026 at 16:30 the volume by Alessandro Bona on monetary finds recovered in Milan between 1982 and 2023 will be presented in Milan.

Published in the Numismatics and Related Sciences series of the Società Numismatica Italiana, the study catalogues and examines 2,382 specimens with emissions from the mid-3rd century BCE to the early 20th century, recovered during 47 stratigraphic excavations. The methodology is contextual: it considers both the coin’s issuance date and the time when it entered the archaeological deposit, helping to distinguish accidental losses from deliberate deposits.

The volume provides:

  • an updated historical framework of Mediolanum from pre-Roman times through the early Middle Ages;
  • detailed descriptions of the stratigraphic sequences from the examined excavations;
  • diachronic overviews of monetary circulation and coin use interpreted in relation to the city’s historical, economic and social developments.

Event information:

  • When: 27 May 2026, 16:30
  • Where: Sala Azzurra, Palazzo Arese Litta, Corso Magenta 24, Milan
  • Admission: free until seats are filled

Speakers include Alessandro Cavagna (University of Milan), Tomaso Maria Lucchelli (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice) and Furio Sacchi (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan). Introduction and moderation by Anna Maria Fedeli (Soprintendenza ABAP for the Metropolitan City of Milan). The author will be present.

For specialists in urban archaeology, numismatics and economic history, this volume is a primary resource for reconstructing coin circulation and the relationships between find contexts and Milan’s historical development.
