Pompeii: Sustainable Development Festival at the Archaeological Park

The Archaeological Park of Pompeii hosts two days dedicated to the 10th Sustainable Development Festival, aimed at schools, associations and citizens interested in agricultural practices that respect the archaeological landscape.

Events take place in two areas of the site: the Parvula Domus, the first cultural and social farm within the UNESCO site, and the experimental fields outside the walls, where agricultural techniques adapted to the Vesuvian microclimate are tested.

  • 20 May 2026, 10:00–13:00 – Roundtable on social and environmental sustainability at the Parvula Domus; followed by practical workshops on garden education, educational beekeeping and outdoor creative and motor activities.
  • 21 May 2026, 10:00–13:00 – Guided visit to the experimental fields with experts from CREA focused on sustainable farming techniques; students from the “M.P. Vitruvio” High School (Agriculture track) will take part with practical demonstrations.

The experiments focus on recovering and selecting ancient crops suited to the microclimate: spelt, fennel, chickpeas, onion and pumpkin. The aim is to identify resilient varieties and adopt practices that combine production with protection of the archaeological context.

The initiative is organised in collaboration with CREA and promotes dialogue between the local community, research and site management. The programme includes both theoretical sessions and hands-on experiences for different audiences.

Participation and information: to register or get details, contact the offices of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii or the organisers. Check for any programme updates before visiting. Location: Pompeii (80045) — approximate coordinates 40.7512189, 14.4886761.
