Ten archaeological objects of Etruscan origin, discovered in a house obtained through inheritance, have been removed from private possession and assigned to the state collection. Among them stands a Etruscan-Corinthian olpe dated to the early 6th century BCE, now housed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Fratta Polesine (Rovigo).
The investigation, led by the public prosecutor’s office and initiated by the Carabinieri Nucleo Tutela Patrimonio Culturale in autumn 2024, began after an heir reported the presence of the items. Because the owner could not produce valid documentation of lawful provenance, the objects were seized under the provisions of the Italian Cultural Heritage Code.
Checks revealed the pieces originated from illicit digs in central Italy and were trafficked through the Cerveteri area before reaching the most recent holders. Some earlier purchasers obtained the artifacts on the illegal market, while the last custodians kept them in good faith but lacked appropriate paperwork.
The most notable object is an Etruscan-Corinthian olpe with wheel-shaped handle features and rich decoration: the neck has parallel bands in brown, red and white; the central zone contains two friezes with real and mythical animal figures, decorated with rosettes and incised crosses; the lower section shows a repeating "wolf-teeth" motif. The piece is comparable to examples held in major Etruscan collections.
With the transfer to the national museum, the artifacts enter the public domain where they can be conserved, researched and exhibited for public benefit. The case highlights the need for transparent provenance documentation and the institutional effort to curb the illicit trade of cultural goods.
Those interested in viewing the museum collections should consult the museum’s official channels for up-to-date information on opening times and exhibitions.
