Remo Salvadori: the passing of an artist of measure

Remo Salvadori, a significant voice in Italian contemporary art, passed away at the age of 79. Born in Tuscany and based in Milan from the early 1970s, Salvadori developed a practice defined by patience, rigor and a strong focus on the relationship between material, time and perception.

Rather than following trends or market strategies, his work evolved into a personal language that connects inner experience with spatial and temporal transformation, often using essential materials and subtle processes.

Artistic path and language

Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Salvadori kept a lasting connection to the rural memory of his origins and the discipline of manual work. After moving to Milan in 1972 he exhibited from the early 1970s onward, maintaining a quietly independent presence in the art scene.

Recurring elements in his work include metal surfaces, water, pigments and everyday objects: materials employed not for spectacle but to investigate change, memory and the perception of time. Water is a frequent motif, used both symbolically and materially to express transformation.

Exhibitions, recognition and retrospective

  • Major participations: Venice Biennale (1982, 1986, 1993) and Documenta Kassel (1982, 1992).
  • Group and solo shows at international venues such as the Art Gallery of Ontario, Stedelijk Museum, P.S.1 and HangarBicocca.
  • President of the Republic Prize for sculpture in 2019, recommended by the Accademia Nazionale di San Luca.
  • In 2025 a comprehensive retrospective took place in Milan across Palazzo Reale, Museo del Novecento and the church of San Gottardo in Corte.

Why his work matters

Salvadori's art exemplifies the idea of artistic practice as a form of knowledge: works arise from a constant dialogue between external reality and consciousness. Viewers are invited into perceptual systems that go beyond mere aesthetics and encourage active contemplation.

His legacy is the transformation of simple materials and measured gestures into devices for experience, maintaining a rare poetic and theoretical coherence in contemporary art.
