Record migratory waterbirds and visitor surge at Padule di Fucecchio

Record numbers of migratory waterbirds and rising visitor numbers at Padule di Fucecchio

This spring the Padule di Fucecchio Nature Reserve is experiencing exceptional activity: record passages of waterbirds alongside a notable increase in visitors. The upturn is largely due to the stable reopening of the Morette Faunistic Observatory and coordinated monitoring and public engagement efforts.

Direct observations, scientific surveys and citizen science projects have been key to collecting valuable data on species presence while involving the public in conservation.

Species recorded

  • Wild ducks (with the garganey especially abundant)
  • Flamingos and herons
  • Shorebirds: up to 17 different species observed simultaneously
  • Terns and gulls
  • Small wetland-dependent birds

Many of these species undertake long-distance migrations; observing changes in plumage and learning about their journeys offers important educational value to visitors.

Monitoring methods and public participation

Data collection relied on:

  • public observations from the observatory using scopes provided on-site;
  • monitoring by qualified staff;
  • the "Fucecchio e Sibolla Bird Project" citizen science scheme, featuring monthly censuses led by ornithologists.

Visitor submissions are validated by experts and added to daily checklists, turning each visit into a participatory learning experience.

Management, habitat care and challenges

Cooperation among managers, volunteers and local authorities has improved both accessibility and habitat conditions for migratory birds. Vegetation control work made the Morette area more suitable for waterbird species. Nevertheless, concerns persist regarding climate change, with prolonged droughts and extreme rainfall events necessitating measures to increase the wetland's resilience.

In the coming months, authorities, the reclamation consortium and local associations will evaluate adaptation and protection strategies.

Events and guided visits: Festa delle Oasi

For the Festa delle Oasi, Padule di Fucecchio will host guided visits and public events on 9 and 10 May 2026. This is a prime chance to take part in live observations, learn about monitoring projects, and discover how to help protect the marshland.

Practical tips for visitors:

  • Bring binoculars and suitable outdoor clothing;
  • Follow marked trails to avoid disturbing wildlife;
  • Join citizen science activities to record your sightings.

For details on guided tours and observatory opening times, check the reserve's official channels or contact the local organizations running the activities.
