Spring 2026: a weekend through the Gran Sasso villages

Autore: Redazione 09/05/2026 19:40

Why visit the Gran Sasso villages in spring

Spring is an excellent time to explore the small towns surrounding the Gran Sasso: flowering meadows, clear skies and mild temperatures make walks and cultural visits especially pleasant. Fortified villages and mountain trails balance natural scenery with historical interest.

How to get there

The area is accessible by car and regional transport. From Rome it takes about 1h30 via A24/A25; from Pescara around 1 hour via SS80. For air travel, Abruzzo Airport (Pescara) is the nearest hub with onward bus or car connections to L'Aquila and nearby villages.

Recommended period

The suggested window is from April to June, when daily temperatures are typically around 15-20 °C and evenings remain cool.

Suggested itinerary (2 days)

  • Saturday morning — Campo Imperatore: climb to the plateau via SS17 to stroll among the pastures and admire Corno Grande. A short walk (about 30 minutes) offers rewarding views.
  • Saturday afternoon — Santo Stefano di Sessanio: visit the Medici Gate, the tower and the parish church; wander the stone alleys and soak up the fortified-village atmosphere.
  • Sunday morning — Rocca Calascio: start from the small lake beneath Santo Stefano and follow the circular trail (approx. 8 km, 4 hours, ~250 m ascent) up to the fortress, one of Italy's highest, with 360° vistas.
  • Sunday afternoon — Return with stops: pause at the Madonna della Pietà chapel and enjoy a meal in a local inn before heading home.

Experiences not to miss

  • Watching the sunset from Rocca Calascio for memorable photos and silence at altitude.
  • Night-sky photography thanks to low light pollution.
  • Discovering local craftsmanship: carved doors, weaving and pastoral tools.
  • If you have extra time, visit the Transhumance Museum or walk around Santo Stefano's lake.

Local flavours

Cuisine here is strongly mountainous: expect maccheroni alla chitarra, arrosticini, lamb stews and pecorino cheeses. Look for agritourisms and inns offering km-0 products and regional wines such as Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

Practical tips

  • Bring sturdy footwear for trails and cobbled lanes.
  • Pack a waterproof jacket and layered clothing for cooler evenings.
  • Carry sun protection and water for half-day or full-day hikes.
  • Choose an albergo diffuso or a local inn to stay immersed in village life; many outdoor activities are free.

Possible extensions

Extend the trip to include nearby spots such as Calascio, Castel del Monte or L'Aquila's historic centre to add more cultural and natural sites to your experience.
