From March 16 a new field campaign has been launched in the area of the Sanctuary of Demeter in Policoro (Matera) to search for traces of the ancient walls of Siris. The project is led by the University of Berlin in cooperation with local partners and engages students and archaeologists in excavation and recording activities.
The investigation aims to identify structural remains and materials that can clarify the urban extent and occupation phases of the sacred area. Expected outcomes include stratigraphic evidence useful for reconstructing the ancient topography and its transformations over time.
During the campaign, interviews were conducted with the scientific team and participating students, highlighting methodological priorities, heritage protection concerns, and the value of hands-on training for emerging archaeologists. The findings will support historical reconstructions and may inform future conservation and enhancement projects for the archaeological area.
For those following archaeological research and site projects, the Policoro campaign is a notable example of international cooperation aimed at clarifying key aspects of the ancient landscape in the Lucanian region.
