Giant Pinocchio in Piazza Santa Croce, Florence: why it was created

A monumental drawing for Collodi's bicentenary

During the Week of the Florentine, and in celebration of 200 years since the birth of Carlo Collodi (1826–2026), the pavement of Piazza Santa Croce in Florence was turned into a large urban canvas: a monumental-scale depiction of Pinocchio. The intervention aimed to combine a literary tribute with broad community participation, attracting both locals and visitors.

Meaning and symbolic readings

Beyond commemorating the author of the famous puppet, the installation carries a symbolic message: a flag bearing the word "Pace" (Peace) in red extends from Pinocchio's nose, signaling civic values and collective commitment. The work links the bicentenary celebration with contemporary themes, making a cultural story visible in the heart of the city for all ages.

The project was not only curatorial but also participatory: students, artists and local associations took part in the realization. The initiative was overseen by Tommaso Brogini together with students from the Alberti Dante high school, supported by local cultural organizations and coordinated by an association.
