Monteprandone: the Procession of the Dead Christ renews a centuries-old tradition

In the medieval centre of Monteprandone, the Procession of the Dead Christ takes place every Good Friday and attracts both locals and visitors. The procession preserves historical rituals and contributes to the enhancement of the town's cultural and religious heritage.

  • When: traditionally held during Holy Week, on the evening of Good Friday.
  • Where: along the narrow streets of Monteprandone's historic centre.
  • Participation: numerous participants, confraternities and a notable presence of young people.

The procession follows a set order of devotional elements: the opening Cross, Passion symbols, the seven last words, virgins dressed in white, sorrowful women singing hymns, the girls with seven swords, the marching band and civil and religious authorities. At the heart of the event is the historic bier carried on the shoulders, a striking devotional and artistic feature.

The bier and the sculpture: the coffin, crafted in the 19th century and decorated with velvet and embroidered details, contains a wooden sculpture of the Dead Christ. These artifacts bridge artistic value and popular devotion, reflecting a tradition that spans well over a century.

Local civic and religious leaders highlight both the spiritual significance and the social value of the procession: it strengthens local identity and brings attention to themes such as peace, solidarity and supporting young people in their future projects.

Visitor tips:

  • Arrive early: streets in the historic centre fill up and access may be controlled for safety reasons.
  • Observe reverence: maintain silence and respect during the procession.
  • Explore the village: use the occasion to stroll the alleys, visit squares and discover local artisans.

The Procession of the Dead Christ in Monteprandone is a clear example of how religious events can serve as tools for promoting small historic towns: they preserve memory, engage younger generations and enhance the area's cultural offer.
