The latest Venice Biennale reopened conversations about identity and curatorial choices in contemporary Italian art. Central to the debate are the national pavilion selections and the new president's public role, which has prompted wide discussion beyond the usual art circles.
The national presentation was conceived as a single immersive installation. The opening room delivers a strong visual impression with clay figures evoking primal, ritual femininity. Yet subsequent sections were criticized for an overload of references and personal elements, where recycled materials and biographical fragments diluted the conceptual unity.
Several national pavilions were perceived as sharing a repetitive aesthetic language. Standout exceptions included the Japan Pavilion, praised for an original take on parenthood and identity, and some Greek contributions. Other exhibits drew criticism for uninspired actionism or for technology that failed to add conceptual depth.
Projects outside the official venues also attracted attention. A photographic and video work honoring a Paralympic archer was highlighted as an example that blends hyperreal detail with reflection on excellence and identity, proving powerful even outside the Biennale's main program.
The appointment of the new president had an unexpected effect: it made art a topic of national conversation. Regardless of his political stance, his presence has refocused attention on the Biennale and on structural questions about how the event is governed.
Observers are calling for a rethink of the Biennale's format: renewed collaboration between institutions and curators and clearer conceptual frameworks are among the main recommendations to strengthen the event's curatorial consistency.
The Biennale remains a key site for those following contemporary art: this edition underlines the urgency of open debate on selection criteria and on the cultural institutions that shape the image of Italian art internationally.
