The European Commission's review of restriction zones for African swine fever (ASF) — removing zone 3 and easing measures in others — has cultural repercussions for the province of Pavia. With 77 municipalities freed from constraints and another 107 seeing milder restrictions, many food festivals and initiatives tied to rural heritage are planning a comeback.

• Local festivals and fairs: organizers are rescheduling spring and summer events focused on cured meats, local produce and farming traditions.
• Agritourism and rural visits: reduced limits make it easier to book stays and visits to farm museums and educational farms that preserve rural culture.
• Small producers and supply chains: breeders and traditional pork artisans hope for stronger direct sales and market presence, while keeping required biosafety standards.
• Cultural networks and local museums: exhibitions, tasting workshops and cultural trails along the Po River and Ticino Park can return to full activity.

Agricultural associations, including Confagricoltura and Coldiretti, welcomed the downgrade as a breath of fresh air for businesses hard hit in recent years. At the same time, organizers emphasize that vigilance remains essential: about 55 municipalities remain in restriction zone II and roughly 52 in zone I, where biosafety measures, wild boar control and limits on pig movements still apply.

For the cultural calendar, the changes offer a concrete chance to recover cancelled or scaled-back events and to promote gastronomic routes that convey the rural identity of Oltrepò and Lomellina, balancing tradition with health safety and sustainability.
