Appennine Lakes Trail: water, woods and new waymarked paths

A recently organized route in the Bologna Apennines proposes a continuous trail of about 57 km linking four lakes and varied natural habitats. The itinerary uses existing CAI paths that have been improved and waymarked, making it suitable for a slow-paced trek to enjoy landscapes, ancient woods and local villages.

Highlights along the trail

  • Lago di Suviana: the largest reservoir in the area, surrounded by pine woods and equipped areas for breaks.
  • Lago del Brasimone: a wilder setting within oak and chestnut woods, offering open shores and scenic stretches.
  • Lago di Santa Maria: smaller and more intimate, less frequented and perfect for quiet stops.
  • Lago di Castel dell'Alpi: the most picturesque, with a village overlooking the water; the only naturally formed lake among the four.

Duration, difficulty and sustainability

The trail is suitable for completion in 3–4 days at a relaxed pace to fully appreciate the surroundings. Terrain ranges from shaded beech woods to exposed ridges, so a reasonable level of fitness and proper hiking gear are recommended.

The initiative aims to promote sustainable tourism and local enhancement by reconnecting existing paths and encouraging low-impact enjoyment of the territory.

Practical tips

  • Plan daily stages according to your pace: allow 3–4 days for the whole route of 57 km.
  • Bring appropriate clothing, sufficient water and an updated map or GPS: some stretches are far from services.
  • Leave no trace: stay on marked trails, do not litter and respect local wildlife and vegetation.
  • Consider staying in local guesthouses or refuges to support communities along the way.

This itinerary is an excellent alternative for trekkers looking for less crowded routes and a direct contact with nature, combined with a focus on sustainability and local discovery.
