When: Friday, April 3 — 5:00 PM. Start: Piazza San Gaetano, in front of the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
As part of Holy Week observances, the streets of Naples' Historic Center will host the evocative procession of the Dead Jesus and the Virgin of Sorrows. With origins tied to the city's historical ties to Spanish rule, the rite has been revived in recent years through the commitment of the centuries-old confraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix, known locally as "la Sciabica", together with the parish community of San Lorenzo Maggiore.
The procession features hooded confreres in dark garments who carry the statues of the dying Christ and the grieving Virgin; they are followed by ladies bearing the Passion symbols on cushions. The procession crosses several well-known streets of the historic center:
The procession represents a meaningful moment for both locals and visitors: attending offers a direct experience of Neapolitan Easter traditions and a chance to witness devotional practices that reflect the city's cultural and religious heritage.
