Cittadella Park: construction update

On the morning of 18 May 2026 a site inspection was carried out at Cittadella Park, confirming that redevelopment works are entering their final stage. The area, significant for its historical and urban value, is being reopened to the public with a combination of archaeological recovery and park refurbishment.

The inspection highlighted adherence to the schedule and the high standard of the interventions. Key outcomes from the visit include:

  • Archaeological excavation: foundations of the former Arsenals have been uncovered following an excavation valued at approximately €1.8 million, making part of the site's historical stratigraphy visible.
  • Event arena: the cavea designed by Giovanni Michelucci has been restored and equipped with modern lighting, sound and surveillance systems to host cultural events and performances.
  • Social spaces: new areas for dining, children's play zones and grassed sections for recreation have been created.
  • Green areas and pathways: overgrown hedges and shrubs that obscured original walkways were removed and new plantings have been introduced to strengthen the park's vegetation.
  • Wall walk proposals: plans are under discussion to restore and adapt walkways along the city walls—connecting Torre di Sant’Agnese, Bastione San Giorgio, the Torre Ghibellina ruins and Torre Guelfa—to form an integrated historical and landscape route.

Officials present emphasized the project's role in recovering a key portion of urban history and improving city life. The redevelopment takes inspiration from Michelucci's original vision while integrating contemporary solutions to deliver a multifunctional public space.

For residents and visitors, the park will provide a combination of archaeological display, cultural programming and green areas designed to attract a broad audience and reconnect historically fragmented parts of the city.
