Parco della Cittadella, Pisa: works progress and archaeological remains emerge

During a technical inspection on the morning of 18 May 2026, the Parco della Cittadella site showed notable progress. The project merges archaeological recovery with green-space redevelopment to return a versatile public area to the city.

  • Archaeological excavation: a section of the foundations of the former Arsenals has been brought to light. The excavation, valued at about €1.8 million, will reveal layers of the site's historical stratigraphy.
  • Event arena: the cavea designed by Giovanni Michelucci has been restored and equipped with modern lighting, sound and surveillance systems to host performances and cultural events.
  • Social areas: new spaces are planned for catering, children's play areas and lawns for relaxation and outdoor activities.
  • Green areas and pathways: hedges and brambles that hid original routes have been cleared; new plantings are scheduled to enhance vegetation across the park.
  • Wall walkways: restoration and upgrading of routes along the historic walls, from the Torre di Sant’Agnese to the Torre Guelfa, are under evaluation to create a continuous historical-landscape path.

Technical controls confirmed that the work is on schedule and meets quality standards. Local authorities highlighted the project's importance for protecting historical evidence and improving public use of the space.

For visitors, the park aims to combine archaeological promotion and cultural programming, attracting diverse audiences and reconnecting parts of the city that have been historically separated.
