Palazzo Re Enzo – royal prison and medieval symbol in the center of Bologna

Autore: Redazione 04/10/2025 16:38

History and description

Located in Piazza del Nettuno, next to Piazza Maggiore, in the medieval heart of Bologna, Palazzo Re Enzo was built between 1244 and 1246 as an extension of the Palazzo del Podestà, to meet the growing administrative needs of the Municipality. Only a few years after its completion, the building became linked to Enzo of Sardinia, son of Emperor Frederick II, who was captured by the Guelphs at the Battle of Fossalta (1249) and held prisoner in Bologna for 23 years, until his death in 1272. The palace thus assumed the role of a state prison for a king, earning the reputation of a “golden cage.”

The building, designed by various architects, is characterized by a medieval Gothic appearance, with a façade composed of a loggia with pointed arches, and interiors featuring numerous halls, among which the Sala del Trecento stands out, later used as the city archive. Today, Palazzo Re Enzo is not a permanent museum but is mainly used for events, exhibitions, and cultural initiatives, especially in the Sala Re Enzo.

Curiosities

According to sources, during the day the king enjoyed relative freedom within the palace spaces, while at night he was allegedly confined in a cage suspended from the ceiling—a legend never definitively proven. In his will, Enzo mentioned three natural daughters, although popular tradition attributes to him a fourth child, born from his love affair with a peasant woman, Lucia di Viadagola, who is said to have symbolically given rise to the Bentivoglio family.

Access

Open only on special occasions, the palace can be visited with an admission fee of €8, with free entry and specific reductions available.

How to reach it

Located in the center of Bologna, the building is easily reachable by car (with nearby parking areas), by train from Bologna Centrale, by bus, or on foot.

A symbol of medieval communal power and guardian of centuries of history, Palazzo Re Enzo dominates the heart of Bologna with its Gothic grandeur.
